Racism is institutionalized. The systemic racism and injustice have plagued black people. The United States has developed a culture of secrecy and comfort. We have practiced the avoidance of America's current racial climate to establish a false reality of tranquility and solace. This philosophy of exclusivity and reservation is unique to America. Over time, this secretive and cautious practice has isolated us from the more liberal and less restricted individuals. In other words, the media and the status quo has taught us that harsh realities aren’t appropriate for everyday discussion. That society would much rather believe they are living in a bubble that closely mirrors a utopia, rather than the real world that dissembles the less fortunate and provides a pedestal for the wealthy and or fair-skinned. America has worked for centuries to baby proof reality and "Back to Black" was founded to unmask the truths that are too edgy to safeguard.
How we plan to achieve our Mission:
1.Vlogs (Video Series)
2.Blogs (Photo and Written Content)
4.Scholarship Program for African-American Students
How do we make a difference?
"Back to Black" is a social enterprise that aims to improve the state of Blackness, with a huge priority given to Black student visibility on College and University campuses nationwide - with a focus on UC Davis. Our scholarship program serves to increase the number of African-American students applying to UC Davis and institutions of higher learning since most students tend to choose a school based on the amount of financial aid provided. Therefore, providing scholarships to African-American students, the number of African-American students will increase because of the incentive the scholarship will provide.
With that said, our mission focuses on the state of blackness, through our vlogs and blogs, race and the Black community will be put at the forefront of discussion. In turn, increasing the accessibility of Black culture, making black students more comfortable in their own skin on campuses, and increasing the exposure of blackness to non-black students, resulting in a more immersed and healthy campus/social climate.
Moreover, in terms of facilitating the necessary conversation of race, we conduct interactive workshops discussing various sociocultural factors pertaining to the black community. We want all workshops to be safe space for critical thought and discussion. We do not support censorship, the truth and authentic exposure is a necessity if we want to progress as a society.
"Back to Black" isn't just a social enterprise, it's a movement that promotes black consciousness and addresses the ignorance that consumes the United States of America - and the globe. We are 8 black students at UC Davis, but our experiences are not unique to ourselves, black students across the country are being disregarded. We act to change this pattern of discrimination, lack of accessibility/opportunity, and much more.
