California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) is a non-profit, charitable organization created to raise money for retired California Thoroughbred racehorses. Founded in 2007 by racehorse owner/breeder Madeline Auerbach, it is run by an independent board of directors.
CARMA is responsible for hosting fundraising events, educating owners and trainers on equine retirement, raising awareness, and working to unify the industry in support of our equine athletes.
In addition, CARMA worked with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) to adopt a rule change allowing for a 0.3% deduction from purses to help fund equine retirement. This deduction, one owners can opt-out of, is used to help support equine retirement farms and other non-profit programs that care for and retrain retired Thoroughbred racehorses. CARMA manages a grant request process and disburses funds to qualified facilities caring for such horses.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
CARMA is dedicated to the goal of providing funding for the rehabilitation, retraining and/or retirement of Thoroughbred horses that have raced in California. It is only through the cooperation and assistance of the entire racing industry that this can be accomplished.
CARMA Cares Annual Charity Fundraiser:
Held annually the first Saturday of the Del Mar race meet, the event is a charity poker tournament and silent auction. Supported by leading owners, trainers, and jockeys, “Cards 4 CARMA” has become a “must-do” event to kick off the Del Mar racing season.
• Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show – this series of Thoroughbred horse shows feature ex-racehorses competing in a variety of disciplines. Presented by the Siegel-CARMA Foundation, this fundraising event celebrates the athleticism, versatility, and spirit of retired racing Thoroughbreds. • CARMA participates in and hosts several fundraisers and awareness events throughout the year. Look for our on-track events while at the races, or visit our website, www.carma4horses.org, for an up-to-date fundraising and event schedule.
• CARMA’s grant process includes sending Requests for Proposals to interested facilities, arranging and participating in site visits for those that have properties, conducting interviews and/or office visits for those that do not have farms, reviewing the grant proposals submitted by each applicant, and allocating funds at the end of each year.
• Since 2008, CARMA has granted over $2.4 million to organizations that retire, retrain, and re-home Thoroughbreds that have raced at partner tracks in California. More than 1500 horses have been helped through our grant process during this time.

CARMA Placement Program
• The CARMA Placement Program was developed to act as a liaison between horsemen and CARMA Aftercare Partners (non-profit benefactors of CARMA grant funds). The primary focus of the program is to facilitate the transition of horses from the racetrack to the aftercare organization that can best place that horse into its second career.
• Horses accepted into the program will be transported from the racetrack to our “triage” unit where they will be evaluated and cared for as they make the transition from racing to second careers. The horse will then be placed with the most appropriate organization, which will then be responsible for rehabilitating and adopting the horse out or offering permanent retirement.
