Endovascular and Minimally Invasive Therapies provides service to the South-eastern Texas hospitals, head-quarted in Laredo, Texas. Dr. Flavio Castañeda-Mendoza is the only Full time Interventional Radiologist south of San Antonio and Houston, Texas. His specialties cover the entire gamut of Interventional Radiology procedures, including Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) and Endovascular Grafting of Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections.
Dr. Castañeda completed his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Monterey, in Monterey, Mexico in 1982. After medical school, Dr. Castañeda completed his internship and radiology residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN in 1987. After his residency, he went on to complete at 2-year fellowship in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at the same institution, under the direction of the world-renowned and pioneer in the field, Dr. Kurt Amplatz. He then went on to the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa and was later recruited in Peoria, Illinois.
Shortly after his arrival to Peoria, he developed the Radiology Research Division Laboratory under the auspices of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria and St. Francis Medical Center. This laboratory has been critical in the current cutting edge interventional radiologic procedures and technology performed in Peoria.
One of the newest mechanical thrombolytic devices available for the recanalization of clothed dialysis grafts bares his name. Several research trials led by Dr. Castañeda have successfully undergone FDA scrutiny and have resulted in current clinical trials or have been approved widespread clinical use.
Dr. Castañeda became the recipient of the Faculty of the Year award in 1993-1994 from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. In addition, he was awarded the Outstanding Research Award in 1996-1997 and the Faculty of the Year for all campuses from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2000-2001.
Dr. Castañeda has authored 1 book and is in the process of publishing another; has authored 45 book chapters in different textbooks, and has published over 90 scientific papers in multiple national and international journals. He has presented over 230 papers and lectures at multiple national and international scientific meetings.
