Using neurofeedback and other non-medicinal research-based approaches, Foci (pronounced “foe-kai”) helps clients alleviate the symptoms associated with ADHD, anxiety, and similar neurological disorders.
WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?
Neurofeedback is computer-based training that enables individuals to train their brain to operate more effectively. The practice has been around for almost fifty years and has ample data supporting its safety and efficacy.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Neurofeedback is unique because it utilizes an individual’s actual brainwave activity for both assessment and training. This raw, unbiased data brings a level of accuracy and direct impact not possible in other therapies.
The Assessment -
Using a cap with sensors, a client’s brainwave activity is recorded under various tasks (rest assured, the sensors only read natural brainwave output – there is never any electrical stimulation or input of any kind). The reading is then compared to a database of high-functioning symptom-free individuals of the same age, and any significant deviations in the client’s output are identified. After comparing this “brain map” to self-reported symptoms and other administered tests, a training protocol is established that will enable clients to train their brain’s dysregulated areas to create a more normative output, in turn alleviating or eliminating symptoms.
Training consists of the client playing video games or watching movies – the twist is that the game is operated entirely by your mind! If the client improves his or her brainwave output in the area being trained, the game will do what he wants it to. If the client doesn’t, it won’t.
The brain learns what it needs to do to obtain the desired outcome, and over time, this new brainwave activity becomes the default output, allowing clients to experience lasting results.
Neurofeedback has been successful in reducing or eliminating symptoms for a wide variety of disorders. It is also commonly used by individuals who simply seek to improve their own mental performance.
