Girls-n-Science (formerly known as Chicks in Science), is a FREE one-day science extravaganza unlike any other science show that provides hands-on, minds-on interactive activities to introduce girls in 4th – 8th grades to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math; to encourage and excite them to pursue education in those areas; and to facilitate relationships between the girls and professional women in scientific disciplines.
Saturday, April 1st, 2017 there are two separate events.
STEM Stars: for 7th and 8th grade girls ONLY
8:30 am check-in
9 am to 12 pm (noon)
This part of the event is FREE, but 7th and 8th grade girls must register for this portion of Girls-n-Science. Registration will be available soon.
Girls-n-Science Main Event: for 4-8 grade girls
12:30 – 4:00 pm
This event is FREE and open to girls in 4-8 grades; must be accompanied by an adult.
There will be over 50 booths with hands-on, minds-on activities. Female STEM-related professionals will be involved with each booth giving girls one-on-one contact with important role models who are also mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and daughters with varied interests and life goals.
The jobs that our 4th graders will hold as adults likely haven’t even been thought of yet, but Industry surveys indicate that many emerging careers will require an understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and the problem-solving, critical thinking, adaptive and collaborative skills gained through the study of these subjects. Often, psychological barriers, gender expectations, and the “coolness” factor can act as barriers to girls in the pursuit of STEM educational and career opportunities. Girls-n-Science strives to abolish negative and fearful attitudes about math and science; empowering young women in both their femininity and intellect.
