You could say that Petals, ink. is a pursuit of happiness. The first wedding flowers I designed were our own. A bright, happy, unforgettable mix of Sweet Peas, Nigella, Zinnias, Black Eyed Susans, and Salpiglossis grown on a small Vermont farm I helped tend. The year was 2003, and I was always busy creating something–hand bound books stitched with thread or fresh soaps and lotions wrapped in handmade paper labels. I knit scarves from plant-dyed wool and loved nothing more than making bouquets of farm grown flowers for market. I was a creator, a writer, an adventurer, a free spirit. What I didn’t know then, was that the all the seeds for a creative career were being planted. In the years that followed we ‘d pack up our meager belongings and drive cross-country to this little city called Austin. We’d buy a fixer-upper, get a dog, start a family, get another dog. And while I’ve always done meaningful work throughout my life, from the non-profit sector to education, there was always an itch to create. In 2013 we officially became a husband and wife team, though Ben’s involvement began in earnest when he built our amazing studio space years before. His ten year position as Director of Construction at Habitat for Humanity provided an invaluable skill set to manage a small business, execute detailed events, and even build a custom ceremony arbor (He makes a nice boutineer too!).
