SCHOOL OF MARTIAL & MEDITATIVE ARTS
The dojo (school) was established in the summer of 1984 in the garage of Dr. Stuart Twemlow and has grown ever since. It is now located at 1400 S. Kansas Ave, Topeka, Kansas with Shihan Stephen Twemlow as the owner and chief instructor. The school’s main style is Hawaiian Kempo but it also offers instruction in Okinawan Kobudo (weapons), Okinawan Kempo, knife defense, MMA training, yoga, kettlebell, Qi Gong, as well as clinics/seminars on various aspects of the martial arts.
This will not be an easy journey to obtain your black belt as it will take 5 – 7 years of hard dedicated training to earn it but along the way you will develop your body mentally and physically and become a better person. This is not a black belt factory. If you want to get a black belt in under 2 years this is not the school for you.
What makes Hawaiian Kempo unique over most of the systems out there is it is based on self-defense not on kata (forms). In this style you will learn various forms but you will also learn their self-defense application (what they mean).
The school’s motto is “there is no enemy,” a phrase seemingly out of place in a martial arts school. At SOMMA, students learn that their greatest enemy is themselves, and that self-improvement is the greatest quest. They learn to better themselves through practice and breathing/relaxation techniques. The more proficient you get at the martial arts the less inclined you will be to use it because of the confidence that you will build within yourself knowing that you can defend yourself but you have nothing to prove.
Although success in competition is not a requirement for progression many students have been successful in various levels of competition competing in karate tournaments, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu tournaments and mixed martial arts and winning at the local, regional, national and world-class level.
This is a family dojo with affordable rates (family discounts) and no contracts so the entire family can join and learn a valuable skill. Whether you are 5 years old and want to learn skills to deal with bullies or a grandparent who wants to remain physically active we have something to offer everybody. As always our first 2 weeks of lessons are free.
