About Business

We at Sound Eye and Laser (SEAL) treat all conditions and diseases of the eye and provide comprehensive eye exams for people of all ages. Sound Eye and Laser is a full-service ophthalmology clinic; it is not unusual for us to see three generations of a single family for everything from a first comprehensive ophthalmic exam, to new glasses or contacts, to cataract and other surgeries. We find that caring for all aspects of eye health keeps us attuned to the complex needs of patients and maintains our passion and commit to serving patients of all ages.
Dr. Stephen G. Phillips has been providing a wide array of eye health services in Seattle since 1986. He performs refractive surgery on hundreds of new patients every year. He also sees thousands of other patients who present a wide range of different needs and concerns.
Our full service optical shop carries a wide range of options for glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. Our licensed opticians will help you select the right frame and lenses for your looks and lifestyle.
We accept and bill most major health insurances and vision plans.
What’s the difference between Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Opticians?
When you go to “get your eyes checked,” there are a variety of eye care providers you might see. Ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians all play an important role in providing eye care services. However, each group has different levels of training and expertise; you should be sure you are seeing the right provider for your condition or treatment.
Ophthalmologist : Dr. Phillips is an ophthalmologist—or an“Eye MD”— he specializes in eye and vision care for every stage of life. Ophthalmologists are the only eye care specialists specially trained to provide the full spectrum of eye care—from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery. Many ophthalmologists are also involved in scientific research into the causes and cures for eye diseases and vision problems.Optometrist : An optometrist receives a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree and is licensed to practice optometry, not medicine. The practice of optometry traditionally involves examining the eye for the purpose of prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses, screening vision to detect certain eye abnormalities, and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases.
Optician : Our Optician, Quyen Tuong, is trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses, and other devices to correct eyesight. She uses Dr. Phillip’s prescriptions but does not test vision or write prescriptions for visual corrections. Opticians are not permitted to diagnose or treat eye diseases.
