St. Vincent Hospital General Surgery Residency Program

2001 W 86th St Indianapolis IN United States 46260

About Business

The St. Vincent Indianapolis General Surgery Residency is committed to training surgeons who will go into either community or academic practices and who will deliver the highest level of skilled compassionate care to their patients. We are a relatively new program, and focus on a close teaching relationship between faculty and residents. All of our positions are 5-year categorical positions. We currently have 12 residents and will be adding 3 additional PGY-1s in 2014. The first Chief Residents will graduate in 2015. Residents rotate on general surgery, specialty surgery rotations, the ICU and in the Emergency Department

There is currently no night float or overnight in-house call for PGY-1s unless on the Emergency Department or ICU service. Residents take call on average 1 in every 5 days. First-year residents will be involved in operative cases from the beginning of the residency.

There are 14 full-time general and pediatric surgery faculty surgeons and an additional 10 faculty in thoracic and vascular surgery. Rotations all occur at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and the attached Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Participation in cases at other nearby St. Vincent Hospitals is available. St. Vincent is a primary teaching hospital of Indiana University School of Medicine, and welcomes 3rd and 4th year medical students for surgical rotations. There are currently approximately 180 residents and fellows at St. Vincent. There is an advanced GI Surgery and Endoscopy Fellowship.

Didactics occur weekly and include a presentation by a resident or faculty member, and a weekly Morbidity & Mortality/Case Conference session. There are also regular meetings with the Program Director and resident participation in program structure is welcome.

The residents work collaboratively with Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants on the trauma and acute care surgery service. St. Vincent Indianapolis is a Level II Trauma Center.

There is a weekly Surgery Clinic at the Max Simon Primary Care Center. Residents also see patients in private offices with the faculty.

There is currently no research requirement, but all residents are encouraged to participate in one or more of the many research projects available.
