Founded in 2007, the Sustainable Carolina Farm & Gardens (SCFG) was the first community garden on campus. SCFG demonstrates a variety of practices including permaculture design, aquatic features, rainwater collection, composting, vermicomposting, box gardens, greenhouse production, and an emerging forest garden. Students may take some of the food they grow and experiment with different crops and growing techniques. SCFG has partnered with various departments of the university and community organizations to provide students with a hands-on component for their studies. Students use space in the garden to explore growing and tasting foods from around the world, food systems, environmental studies, anthropology, biology and even art and business.
Whether you want to positively impact food systems at the policy level or from the ground up (literally), you can get involved by contacting our Assistant Garden Manager or Farm Manager. If you want to grow with us, see our volunteer hours, workshops and special events. If you have any questions, want to maintain a box garden, or would like to compost, contact the Assistant Farm Manager, Andrew O'Flaherty: afo[at]email.sc.edu.
